Fire of Origin

Fire of Origin
Tara Sasiadek
Oil on Canvas
24” x 52”

We all have stories we tell about ourselves, and sometimes they become more myth than reality. When I was eleven, my family’s house burnt to the ground. We were safe, and for a child unconcerned with insurance and the like, the major effect of this event on myself was creating a fascination with fire. This painting is from the prologue of a graphic novel in progress, called Logos, but it also draws heavily on my memories of that house fire in my own past.

Palpitation

This is a self portrait, meant to display the vulnerability of displaying your worst aspects. To me, the most terrifying monster has always been my own potential to do harm. In a similar vein, an illness, such as heart arrhythmia, is both alien and enemy, and a deep part of ourselves.

Endless Winter

No matter how much I love the seasons, there is a point where winter will not let go. Here is a simple meditation on the green trying to break through ice and slush, violent and silent in its efforts.

Reach Abundance

“Exceptionality” is mainly used in education today as a politically correct term for discussing a disability. I feel that Exceptionality is in fact a much more accurate term than “disability.” For every obstacle we are given, the human body and mind reaches around into uncharted areas of potential. The individuals I work with who have exceptionalities are incredibly gifted. This painting is a tribute to their beauty and determination.

Claustrophobia

This painting is about the pleasures and trials of a relationship between three people. There is a web of interrelation and shared history that cannot be seen but is present in all interactions, and an inherent tension in a group of three that can be destructive if not kept in balance.

Jean D’Arc

Jean D’Arc is a work inspired by a time of personal struggle with both faith and power-relationships, as well as a reflection on the lyrics by Leonard Cohen:

“It was deep into his fiery heart
He took the dust of Joan of Arc,
And then she clearly understood
If he was fire, then oh -she must be wood.
I saw her wince, I saw her cry,
I saw the glory in her eye.
Myself I long for love and light,
But must it come so cruel, and oh so bright?”

Apocalypses in the Plural

Because, you can never have to many.
